The bag on the boat

Freedom boat without rigid bags and wheels

Imagine a sailor: tattoos, cap and on his shoulder his bag made of jute or of recycled fabric of broken or old disused sails.
The classic sailor bag used to travel on sailing boat: dracon is the lightest and most resistant material, suitable for the sea and the beach. In the past cotton silk and jute were used.
And that is exactly the trick ... on a sailing boat you do not have to carry "suitcases", "trolley" or "trunks" ... but soft bags without wheels.
Why only soft bags without wheels?
Generally speaking, on a sailing boat there are not wide spaces, even if Wendy is particularly comfortable thanks to its 4.5 meters width, and it is not possible to think that in a cabin, however comfortable, there could be a lot of space.
That's why when booking a sailing holiday you need to use a soft bag, even if not a classic sailor bag.
That’s why, on sailing boats (but boats in general ...) are banned, rigid or semi-rigid suitcases, trolleys, trunks, wheels and all those suitcases that once emptied cannot be folded.
In fact this is the trick ... it is necessary to have the possibility to fold them!
Keep in mind that in a sailing boat’s cabin, there are many small closets: small lockers, shelves, lockers, spaces under floorings, which could have a large capacity (maybe not wide enough for a suitcase), but putting inside a suitcase we have no further space for anything else…
Hard and rigid vacant elements in navigation can damage the boat’s structure and its woods, moreover during a storm. Furthermore, the teak floor is not designed for sliding hard materials which could irreparably damage it.
Up to now, I tried to explain why it is necessary to sail with a soft bag!
Now …that you are like a real sailor on the boat and the skipper assigns you a cabin, what do you have to do?
The first thing is to unpack the whole bag! You have to organize where to put all your staff and how to fix it. Again there is a simple reason for this...
In the sea the boat moves even when the sea is calm: try to imagine when sailing with wind and waves ... under deck becomes dangerous and impractical. In case you may need something unexpected, for example if you feel a bit cold, or you have to take something in particular… if all is well organized in your cabin you can do it quickly and without problems: go downstairs, take what need and come back immediately upstairs.
If your bag (not suitcase 🙂) is still full, going into the cabin and looking around to find what you need, while the boat is under the effect of pitching and rolling, could be a hard task also for those who do not suffer for seasickness and you risk to spoil a day of your sailing holiday, if not the whole holiday.
So are you ready to sail? With your Soft Bag without Wheels!
